Iowa MMJ legal staff first met Lupe, a survivor of crime, in 2015. 6 years after applying to get her protected and secure immigration status under a “U-Visa”, her application was approved this month! Here’s what she said after receiving the approval: “Not having an immigration status prevents you from having a decent job with a better salary, not being able to rent an apartment, not being able to get a cell phone in your name because you don't have a state ID. In the most difficult moment of my life, you appeared and helped me. Lawyers charge a lot of money and being in difficult times like I was, it was impossible to hire a lawyer. You have made a difference in my life, taking the time to explain the process over and over again until I understand it well. Now the American dream has opened the doors for me and my kids. My wish of being a legal permanent resident will become true in three years. My children and I are very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet you. I would like to be able to go to Des Moines to meet you in person and thank you for the work that you and the organization do every day. You have a special place in my life because you helped me when I needed it most. I am eternally grateful to each of you.” |
