Iowa’s English-Only law was passed in 2002 and is viewed as an anti-immigrant bill with nativist undertones. The impact of the law has made it harder to have healthy, safe communities, has discriminated against and isolated English-language learners in Iowa. Especially during the COVID-19 global pandemic, immigrant and refugee communities have been disproportionately negatively impacted because of significant language barriers accessing information and resources to keep families safe. It’s time to ease restrictions that this law placed upon Iowa’s agencies to make them more accessible, inclusive and welcoming.
